Editorial Standards

Last updated: April 28, 2026

This page explains how Home Run Gifts researches, writes, fact-checks, updates, and corrects our gift guides. We publish it because we want our readers — and search engines — to know exactly how our recommendations come to be.

Editorial Independence

  • We do not accept payment, free product samples, or other consideration in exchange for inclusion in a gift guide or for a positive write-up.
  • Our editorial team selects which products to feature. Brands cannot pay to be included.
  • Affiliate commission rates do not influence rankings. A product we recommend most highly may pay us nothing; a product with a high commission rate may not appear in a guide at all.
  • If a brand sponsors any future content (e.g., a sponsored social post or video), that sponsorship will be disclosed clearly within that content and will not affect our editorial articles.

How Our Writers Are Matched to Guides

The single biggest editorial decision we make on any guide is who writes it. We assign writers based on real-world life-stage experience, not just availability:

  • Guides for grandparents, gifts for grandmothers, and gifts for older adults are written by Donna K., who is an actual grandmother. Her byline is “Picked by a Grandma” because the perspective is the real thing.
  • Guides for young children are written primarily by Joy Y. and Stacey B., both parents writing about age groups they live with.
  • Guides for teen and tween girls are written by Marissa B. and Emily G.
  • Guides for adult men, especially milestone birthdays, are written by Daniel M.
  • Guides for women in their 20s and 30s are written by Abi M.
  • General gift-research guides across a range of ages and occasions are written by Kevin W., the site’s founding contributor.
  • Editor and owner Mike M. reviews and approves every published guide.

Where we have not personally lived a recipient profile, we say so plainly and rely on credible secondary sources. We do not invent personal experience.

How Gift Guides Are Built

To be included in a Home Run Gifts guide, a product must:

  • Fit the recipient profile. Not “fits the search query.” A “best gifts for 8-year-olds” guide should not contain an item that is technically appropriate but would be opened with a polite shrug. The test is: would a real 8-year-old actually be excited?
  • Be currently available. We try to remove discontinued items and out-of-stock products promptly. If you find one we missed, please let us know.
  • Be priced credibly. Gift prices on third-party retailers move daily. We list approximate price ranges and note when an item is at a price point that significantly changes our recommendation.
  • Be legitimately recommendable. If we cannot fill out a category with strong picks, we’d rather have a shorter list than pad it with items we wouldn’t actually buy.

A Note on Prices and Availability

Most products in our guides are sold by third-party retailers (Amazon, Etsy, brand websites). Prices and stock change frequently, especially during holiday seasons. We refresh our highest-traffic guides on a recurring schedule, but the price you see at checkout is the authoritative one — not the price quoted in our article.

Sources

Where we cite a manufacturer claim, an age recommendation, a safety standard, or product specifications, we link to a primary source where one exists (the manufacturer’s product page, an authoritative parenting or safety organization, or a credible review). Where the recommendation is based on the writer’s own life experience with a recipient profile, we say so in the writer’s voice.

Updates and Recency

  • Every published guide carries a “Published” or “Updated” date.
  • Our highest-traffic guides — particularly age-and-occasion guides — are reviewed at least once a year and refreshed when the popular gifts in that category have shifted.
  • When we substantively update a guide (more than fixing a typo), we update the “Last updated” date and note what changed when relevant.

Corrections Policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we want to fix them.

  • How to report a correction. Send the URL of the guide and what’s wrong through our contact form. If you have a screenshot, link, or other documentation, please include it.
  • Response time. We aim to respond to correction requests within 7 business days.
  • Material corrections. When we correct a factual claim — for example, a wrong age recommendation, a discontinued product still listed as available, or an inaccurate brand description — we update the guide.
  • Discontinued or unsafe products. When a product is discontinued, recalled, or otherwise no longer recommendable, we remove the listing or replace it.

What We Will Not Do

  • We will not publish a paid review without disclosure.
  • We will not include a product in a guide simply because the brand has a high affiliate commission rate.
  • We will not remove a tepid or critical assessment in exchange for a commercial relationship.
  • We will not publish AI-written guides without a named human author who has personally reviewed and stands behind every recommendation.
  • We will not invent firsthand experience. If a writer hasn’t lived a recipient profile, we won’t pretend they have.
